Holy Thursday at Home and Abroad
Great and Holy Thursday is rich in its commemorations, symbols and rituals. On this most unique day Churches celebrate the introduction of the mystery of Eucharist [the foundational event for the divine liturgy and the establishment of the ministerial priesthood]. We celebrate the ritual of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. We deplore the betrayal of Christ by Judas, and mourn with Him for his lost disciple. And finally we stand vigil with the Christ as he pours out his agony in the Garden at Gethsemane. It is a day of immense joy and deep sorrow.
In Romania a woman goes early to the graves of loved ones, lighting candles, taking food and staying to pray through sunrise.
